On June 21, the Village of Northfield launched a free rain barrel program at no cost to the Village or residents.  Rain barrels can improve the health of the plants and animals in your yard (chlorinated water isn’t as good for them as rainwater!), reduce the environmental cost and impact on your wallet of cleaning and pumping water you no longer need need, and reduce flooding in your yard by holding back water running off your roof.

The barrels, furnished by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s rain barrel program, are delivered and come with installation and maintenance instructions.  Northfield is joining over 60 Chicago suburbs — including Kenilworth, Wilmette, Evanston, Skokie, Glenview, Morton Grove, and Niles — in taking advantage of the MWRD program launched in 2014.

Winnetka is not yet a member of the program.

Why hasn’t the Village of Winnetka joined this program already? Let’s join the wave (over 60 Chicago Suburbs!) of communities in our area that are already offering this to their residents and give this a try! Why not? It’s free! Contact the Village and ask them to look into it!
